Our Story

Born from the Unión Turística Nación Mixe, we have been collaborating with families and communities since 2015 to develop responsible tourism infrastructure and services that respect and showcase the unique characteristics of the Mixe region.

Cultural and Environmental Context

The Sierra Mixe of Oaxaca is a biodiverse region with mountainous landscapes and cloud forests. Home to the Ayuuk people, it is known for its ancestral traditions and deep connection to the land.

The Team

Raiz Ayuuk was founded by Uriel Alcántara, whose roots are deeply connected to the Sierra Mixe. As president of the Unión Turística Nación Mixe, he has focused on promoting tourism and conservation and spent the last years building Raiz Ayuuk, a community-based, regenerative tourism organization. Supported by his partner Chala Garcia, who shares his dream of preserving the region’s uniqueness, they are passionate about protecting the sacredness of the land, its people, and culture.
